Feeding your 6 month old

While most babies begin weaning at 6-months and transitioning to a primarily solid diet, their main source of nutrition will still be milk, whether they are breastfeeding or on a formula diet. As they wean and transition away, breastfeeding will become less and less frequent over time, but it is important not to remove it from their diet too quickly.

When can I introduce solid foods?


The aim is to introduce your baby to the notion of solid foods such as baby rice and fruit puree at around 6-months, when they show particular physical skills such as grasping and holding their head up on their own. This will help them diversify their tastes, and will make sure they aren’t fussy eaters when they grow up.

How often should I feed my 6-month-old baby?


Bottle fed babies will still need between 800ml-900ml of milk over a 24-hour period. By 6-months, babies tend to need feeding less frequently than before. Aim for about 5 evenly spaced 200ml feeding sessions a day. Feed on demand if you’re breastfeeding.

 

Your baby will let you know if they are hungry. As always be prepared for days when your baby seems extra hungry. They could be entering a growth spurt.
