Benefits of NIV therapy

What is NIV therapy?

Artificial respiration methods have persisted for long and failed to provide adequate levels of respiratory care and assistance. NIV is the Non-Invasive Ventilation technique which provides ventilator support through the upper airway of the patients using a mask or a similar device. The artificial respiration or invasive methods bypass the upper airway using the tracheal tube while this technique

distinguishes itself by application of a positive airway pressure. It is a valuable treatment and we at Philips ensure that the patients get trained staff and interface in order to ensure adequate monitoring.

Benefits of NIV therapy

Non-invasive ventilation is gaining importance around the globe over invasive ventilation. It helps the management of both acute and chronic respiratory failure and thus is being used worldwide. Here are some of the benefits of NIV therapy which are known globally:

1. Improved survival rate: NIV delivers the right amount of inspiratory and expiratory pressures or tidal volumes to support the ventilator demand of an individual. It enables customisation and also allows enhancement of alveolar minute ventilation. Along with this it works on recruiting the collapsed alveoli in the lungs which improves the breathing capacity of lungs naturally. Unlike invasive therapy, this can be performed at the comforts of your home. NIV has led to fewer deaths of patients with acute respiratory failure.

2. Ease routine: NIV helps the patients in using more of their lung capacity by decreasing the effort required for breathing and thus makeing it easy for them to conduct their routine activities.

3. Shorter stays on intensive care: NIV respiratory care therapy is convenient, effective and suitable for at-home treatment. Thus patients spend less time in the hospitals and recover quickly. The elderly prefer to stay in the comforts of their home and thus besides avoiding the adverse effects of invasive ventilation, NIV has an added advantage of comfort for the patient. It doesn’t involve placement of an artificial airway and is thus supported both inside and outside the ICU.

4. Reduced risk of infection: NIV reduces the incidence of nosocomial infections and complications which are present in invasive therapies. It has successfully decreased deaths caused by acute respiratory diseases. NIV is a valuable treatment with unique considerations and it significantly reduces the incidence of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (commonly known as VAP) and COPD (defined in section below) as well.

What are the conditions treated with NIV?

NIV as mentioned above is an effective solution for both chronic and acute respiratory diseases. It is an effective treatment for all such problems. Below are two conditions in medical terms that are treated with NIV:

1. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) - It is a term for the group of progressive lung diseases which slowly destroy the air sacs in your lungs interfering with the outward air flow. COPD leads to tightness in chest and makes it harder to breathe.

2. Chest wall disorders - Chest wall is one of the critical components of the respiratory pump in our body and includes ribs, spine and other nerves connecting to the central nervous system. Any deformity can lead to respiratory failure in patients.

Every breath counts, and at Philips we ensure that we leave no stone unturned in providing the best respiratory care to our patients.
